2 Tablespoons red food coloring
2 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
½ cup shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
2 Eggs
1 cup Buttermilk
2 ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 Tablespoon Vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla
• 3 Tablespoons flour
• 1 cup milk
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup softened butter- (2 sticks)
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350F degrees. In a medium mixing bowl make a paste of the food coloring and cocoa.
Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly, beat in eggs then add in cocoa paste.
Add buttermilk alternately with flour and salt, beating between each addition.
Add vanilla, put soda into vinegar, then add to batter, beating well.
Grease and flour 2 9” cake pans then pour in batter, Bake 25-30 minutes. You can start the making the frosting at this point, or if you have the time you can wait to make the frosting until after the cake has finished cooking and cooling.
Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes
Remove from pan, cool completely
Optional: split each layer, making 4 layers
Make the frosting
In a saucepan over medium heat cook milk and flour until thick (be careful not to let it come to a hard boil or it may scorch the milk) then remove from heat and let cool completely.
In small bowl cream butter and sugar until fluffy about 3 minutes
Add vanilla and milk to mixture slowly beat until the consistency of whipped cream.
